The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is legendary for its price/performance ratio. Really, pretty much unbeatable — until very recently. Sure hope the new Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is that much better, because it now needs to be. I’m betting Canon has gotten it right.
I can attest to the wonders of Canon’s original “plastic fantastic” nifty 50, having acquired one after dropping my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 [B&H | Amazon].
On paper, the new Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is exactly what Canon prime fans (especially those doing video work) would want: an upgrade to fast, silent stepper motor technology; seven aperture blades from five for nicer bokeh; a more robust mount; and better lens coating to combat flare and ghosting.
With a pre-order price of $125 [B&H | Amazon], it’s priced right, too.
It’s so nice when a company gives its customers what they want!
I just hope –for both Canon’s and Canon shooters’ sakes — that it really is all that and a bag of potato chips, and that Canon refreshes their entire lens line-up very, very soon.
Here’s looking at you, kid.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (Simple Test)
This is a test we found on youtube showing the older Nifty 50 and the new one – (older one is first).
Note how quiet the focus is and it doesn’t seem to hunt!
